When Louisiana State University astronomer Tabetha Boyajian and her colleagues first noticed the star known as KIC 846285, they were perplexed. The object, affectionately known as Tabby’s star, would experience unusual dips in brightness, sometimes by as much as 22%, that would last for oddly spaced-out periods of time. There have been a number of theories put forth, including the potential of an alien megastructure, but today’s majority of academics think the star is being encircled by an unusual ring of dust that is the reason for the darkening.

Numerous astronomical bodies, such as Neptune’s geyser-emitting Triton and Jupiter’s excessively volcanic Io, could claim the title of oddest moon in the solar system. Saturn’s Hyperion, a pumice-stone-like irregular rock covered in countless craters, is among the oddest-looking objects. In addition, the NASA Cassini mission discovered that Hyperion was charged with a “particle beam” of static electricity that was emitted into space and visited the Saturn system between 2004 and 2017.

On its own, the high-energy neutrino that struck Earth on September 22, 2017, wasn’t all that remarkable. At least once per month, physicists at the IceCube Neutrino Observatory in Antarctica observe neutrinos with a similar energy level. However, this one was unique since it was the first to come with sufficient details about its origin to allow scientists to point telescopes in the direction it originated from. They discovered that it had been launched at Earth 4 billion years prior by a blazar, a supermassive black hole at the galaxy’s core that had been consuming nearby material.
