NASA replaced space station supplies after a commercial rocket exploded off the Virginia coast in 2014.

Then-United Launch Alliance chief technologist Bernard Kutter proposed a way to save the experiment.

The Low-Earth Orbit Flight Test of an Inflatable Decelerator (LOFTID) will launch aboard a ULA Atlas V rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base at 2:25 a.m. PT on Nov. 1.

Kutter, a visionary aerospace engineer, died on August 12, 2020, before completing the mission.

Chafer attributed the increase in demand to easier space availability and the steady growth of cremation as a burial option

Kayla, her husband, brother, mother, uncle, and grandmother will attend the Kutter-named mission's launch in California

Engineers have employed the same solid heat shield to land spacecraft on Mars since the first uncrewed Viking mission 50 years ago

The larger the heat shield, the more drag it can suck out of the Martian atmosphere to drop heavier cargo and astronauts.

Del Corso said he had begun drawing an inflatable heat shield on the company's new Vulcan engines.
